What is Abrasive Blasting?
Abrasive blasting, in plain terms, is like power-washing with sand or other gritty materials instead of water. It's used to clean surfaces, strip away old paint, rust, or dirt, and prepare them for a fresh coating. The process involves shooting gritty materials at high pressure to scrub away unwanted layers, leaving a smooth surface ready for painting or powder coating. It's widely used in industries like automotive, construction, and manufacturing to ensure surfaces are properly prepped for new paint or protective coatings.
The Best Surfaces
Surface preparation is one of the most important steps in applying a coating. Even if the right coating is chosen, it won’t perform well if the surface isn't prepared properly. Smooth surfaces, like glass, make it hard for coatings to stick, but rough surfaces, like sandpaper, allow coatings to hold on better.
Abrasive blasting creates a rough texture on steel, with tiny peaks and valleys called surface profile. This helps coatings grip tightly, which is why it's often called an "anchor pattern." Good surface prep leads to a stronger, longer-lasting coating.
